Common Reasons Residential Plans Receive Building-Department Comments
A review comment is not necessarily a design failure. Many comments result from missing information, conflicting sheets, or project-specific documents that were not included in the submission.
Incomplete project information
Comments often request clearer property data, scope descriptions, code references, dimensions, elevations, sections, or construction details. Use the municipality's current checklist and make sure the application and drawings describe the same work.
Coordination conflicts
Floor plans, elevations, sections, structural information, energy documents, and manufacturer layouts must agree. Changes made on one sheet but not carried through the set can create questions about heights, openings, bearing, egress, or assemblies.
Missing supporting documents
The permit package may also need a survey, septic approval, energy report, structural calculations, truss documents, product information, or approvals from other departments. Confirm who owns each deliverable and respond to comments as one coordinated package.
